Grinding is a multipoint cutting process where abrasive grains remove material. The amount of material removed depends on various parameters of grinding wheel. Grinding is a finishing operation and generally removes smaller amount of material compared to metal cutting operation like milling.

Grinding wheel are classified as based on type of operation bonded abrasives, coated and non-woven abrasives , diamond abrasive, polishing and buffing.

How to Select Grinding wheel

Abrasives- different application needs different abrasives like aluminium oxide, silicon carbide, zirconia, Diamond, CBN.

Grit- this indicates the size of the abrasive particle based on application it can be coarse to fine or very fine. Coarse grain allows more metal cutting but gives poor surface finish wheras fine grains removes relatively smaller amount of material and is used for precision finishing.

Grade- This indicates the wheel of bonding material which hold abrasive grains. It can be soft, medium or hard. Wheel speed, flow of coolant, feed rates and depth of cut are parameters that decide grade selection.

Structure- This indicates the spacing of abrasive grains. dense structure wheel will have lower chip clearance so need more coolant and can remove lower material.

Bond- This holds the abrasive grain particles in place. Vitrified wheel (V), Oxychloride (O), Silicate (S), Resinoid (B), Shellec (E ), Rubber (R) are the types which used. Vitrified wheels are the most popularly used industrial application.
